About Susan J. Fanburg, MD
Dr. Susan Fanburg, a graduate of George Washington School of Medicine, completed her pediatric residency at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. She holds a B.A. in Chemistry, graduating with honors, from Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
“I am deeply passionate about working with children and their families. I believe that building strong, positive relationship is essential for fostering confidence in my care,” says Dr. Fanburg.
Dr. Fanburg has extensive experience caring for children of all ages, including both primary care and specialized pediatric needs. She has been an established provider with Foundation Medical Partners since 2015. Prior to this, she had been serving as medical director at Virginia Pediatric and Adolescent Center in Springfield VA, where she cared for infants, children, and adolescents in both inpatient and outpatient settings. She also worked at the Hospital for Sick Children in Washington, DC, managing complex cases and providing acute care. Dr. Fanburg enjoys focusing on preventive health and patient education, ensuring families feel confident in managing their children’s health.
Dr. Fanburg explains her approach: “I have had extensive in-depth medical training, but it was after becoming a parent to my three children that I gained a new perspective on the unique challenges that families face. This experience has enhanced my ability to empathize, build trust, and provide care that is not only clinically sound but also compassionate and attuned to the needs of the child and their family.”
Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Fanburg is an active member of the community. She has volunteered in various leadership roles, including as a running club coach, an active volunteer within the schools, as well as a leader with Walk with a Doc, a national organization that promotes healthy living. She is a dedicated marathon runner who has completed numerous races. Dr. Fanburg also enjoys hiking, cooking, traveling and spending time with her husband, Stephen, a cardiologist, and their three children.
“By modeling my passion for exercise, healthy food choices, and a deep love for the environment, I have become a more holistic and effective pediatrician. I believe that leading by example allows me to inspire children and families to adopt a healthier lifestyle and foster a greater sense of responsibility towards their well-being and that of the planet. This personal commitment not only enhances my ability to provide care but also strengthens my connection with families as we work together to promote long-term health and sustainability.”
